About The DK

Hi there, my name is Sydney.  By day, I am an accountant for an international missions organization.  By night, I love cooking (obviously), studying languages, and hanging out with my fabulous husband who also happens to be my best taste-tester.

For those of you who haven’t followed me from the beginning, let me again describe the goal of this blog.
Before a year or 2 ago, I absolutely.could.not.stand cooking.  I enjoyed baking the occasional cookies but even that was wearisome.  Something about moving to a different continent only three months after marrying a guy I hadn’t known all that long, combined with the challenge of even doing normal grocery shopping at a small foreign grocery store made something click in my little stubborn head.  Suddenly, the whole food thing was very intriguing.  I can’t really explain why.  Was it my new role as a wife?  Was I just finally becoming a real adult?  Was it realizing we didn’t have any more “easy food” to depend on and so I better get a move on?  Well, regardless of “why,” it happened.

And, BAM, a new world had opened up.  A vast, fascinating and thrilling world.  But where was I to begin?  I hadn’t even HEARD of food blogs yet, nonetheless all the other websites out there for recipes and cooking tips.  And I was in Peru, where everything was (obviously) in Spanish with different brands and unpredictable availability. Well, I just kind of dove in.

About a year later, I realized I had become quite good at baking.  It was especially fun to bake sweet goodies in Peru for all our local friends because most of the desserts they hadn’t even heard of!  They have a huge array of their own desserts, but it was quite entertaining to introduce them to new ones.

The husband and I had already been running another blog for over 2 years to highlight events in our ministry and to keep our family and supporters regularly updated.  This idea, combined with my tendency to track & record things, was the cause of our Kitchen Blog.  And THEN, I suddenly discovered the universe of food blogs.  It was unbelievable.  Honestly, it made me feel quite silly about my own and I had the settings set to “private” for the longest time!

All the other blogs I saw were by professionals in the kitchen, showcasing gorgeous dishes and giving expert tips.  So why not shake things up a bit and have a blog that tracks my learning in the kitchen? I was hesitant about it but made the blog public.  I then quickly realized (as I mentioned above) that I had been staying in my comfort zone of desserts.  Okay, Sydney, now is the time to explore new territory!

And now, I believe I have really done well at trying new things and learning from many other cooks in the process.  I love this blog and hope that all you other beginners out there will enjoy watching my learning in the Drinkwater Kitchen!

Thanks for checking out the blog.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please email me.

  1. Hi Sydney! If you ever come up with a really good gluten free recipes i would love to know. More specifically gluten free, egg free and cow milk free. We found out Devin is allergic to all of this.

    Thanks!
