It's February 1st - You Know What That Means!

Valentine's Day is in 2 weeks.  The dreaded holiday for my husband but one of my favorites!  Probably mostly because it's a different excuse to eat lots of little heart candies...

and cake pops!

I made these over the weekend.

And I was finally able to use Mike's cake pop platform he made for me a few months ago.  We tried to get it ready for the last ones I made, but the paint wasn't quite dry enough.
I LOVE IT!

See those two smaller sections?  Well, they are removable for 1) smaller platforms and 2) more holes in the main one.

My favorite part of cake pops is sharing it with as many people as possible.  Not counting the 20+ Mike ate the day I made them (no exaggeration), I packaged them all up and brought them to church with me on Sunday.  It was a blast handing them out to random people all morning!

Like I mentioned last time, these do take more time to complete than most desserts, so I'll probably just stick to the few-times-a-year plan.  Nonetheless, they are very fun to create!

What are your plans for Valentine's Day?

P.S. In the middle of this post, I ran out of free Blogger photo space.  I guess that means I'm a blogging machine!

I Am Just Slightly Famous Now

Or maybe not at all....

Regardless, check out this link.  I am in the FIRST photo and I show up in her Oregon Slideshow 3.5 times!  hehe.

Pumpkin Cake Pops

Last week inspired me…or I gave in to all my friends wanting more.  Probably both!

Bakerella’s pumpkin cake pops called for green tic-tacs.  Though she is the expert and there’s no way I could come up with even a fraction of her terrific ideas, I thought maybe I could find a better pumpkin stem that didn’t taste like spearmint…Turns out, my husband did!  We were on the hunt and our second candy store visit produced this idea:
They even have the “bumpier” look of a pumpkin stem.  All you need is green licorice (Apple! Another great fall flavor!):

I brought several dozen Cake Pops to a party Saturday night, but forgot to take photos of all the happy Cake Pop eaters.  Trust me, there were a lot of them.  However, I saved a basketful for some more friends and snapped these pictures last night:
Mmm cake pops with coffee.  Unbelievable.

These do take quite a long time to make, but the smiles they produce are so worth it.  Plus, I couldn’t stop eating them myself…

Bakerella Book Signing

Honestly, I was afraid to blog about this.  I didn’t want to get my hopes up.  But now that it actually came true, I have to tell you all about it!!

One of my top favorite blogs to follow is Bakerella – you’ve always seen it linked on the right.
The photo that made her famous.
Well, she recently published a book on her Cake Pops, which I made back in July for the first time.  It was an immediate hit within my circle of friends and is still talked about.  I keep telling everyone I’ll make them again, but continue putting it off – a little salivating torture is good for them sometimes!

When I heard Bakerella had added a stop in Oregon on her book signing tour, I was happy, excited, thrilled, you name it!

Fortunately, I am blessed with a mom who let me drag her along.  She was my designated photographer for the day and also the one to guide my star-struck self out of the store after I had finally met Bakerella!  Hehe.

Look, I was literally number TWO in a huge line of Bakerella fans.

I’ve never done anything like this.  Never been such a fan of someone/something.  Never gone to meet a famous person on purpose.   But here I was…

This is me after I actually yelled, “Look!  There she is!” as she was walking toward the store.  I mean, who WAS this crazy redhead who, until an hour before, was probably the quietest in the whole line of fans.  The entire line then looked across the mall at her and started clapping as she walked by.

Before the actual signing, we were able to crowd around her table for a Q&A time.  Being at the front of the line, I was able to be at the front of the table!  Literally, I had to keep telling myself to snap out of it, stop the grinning, and pay attention to what she was saying!

And here I am with Bakerella herself!

Oh, it was just a wonderful day.  Sigh.

4th of July Cake Pops

I've been wanting to make these for months.  They aren't that complicated, but let me just say they took a lonnng time to complete.  But "first times" for everything take longer than normal - next time will be so much easier.

Yes, I went through and separated all the Blues and Whites because I could not find single-color stars anywhere.

1. Bake a cake (or 2).

2. Cool completely.
3. Dump into bowl.

4. Crumble completely.

5. Mix with almost a whole tub of frosting (not quite all).

6. Form into 1-inch balls.

7. Refrigerate for a couple hours (or overnight).
8. Melt your candy melts (or chocolate coating) - whatever you decide on.
9. HERE IS THE TRICK step I added myself - Dip ball into candy coating BEFORE putting ball onto stick. The candy dries almost immediately and will stay on the stick that way.  I lost many cake balls before figuring that one out.
10. Put cake ball on stick - push it through a little less than halfway.
11. Dip completely in candy coating - I actually spooned it on and spread.  Whatever you decide, do it FAST.
12. Dip/Cover in sprinkles....again, FAST.
13. Place in styrofoam board to complete drying process.
14. Optional: put in individual treat bags and tie them up all prettily.  I just did it for some of them.

Aren't they cute?!

I actually made these sugar cookies before the cake pops as backup in case they flopped.

Turns out, my husband was practically inhaling them, so I think they were pretty successful!
